Which Type of Web Hosting Do You Need?

It’s often difficult to know what type of web hosting you need so we’ve written an article explaining the various types. Hopefully this will help you with your decision making process. Here’s a snippet:

With shared web hosting a single computer referred to as a box or a server will generally hold a large number of websites. The number will depend on the company, the cost, and the hardware that makes up the machine. Shared hosting is often a reliable hosting option for most websites including both small business and personal use. The overall quality, speed, and cost will fluctuate significantly from host to host so it is important to do your homework before selecting a shared hosting center. Often websites which abuse or use more resources including CPU time or bandwidth will be shut down. If your website requires heavy resource allotment you will likely need to look into another hosting option.

ISP McColo Shut Down After Connection Found To Spammers

Some good news on the spam/fraud front. McColo was shut down on Tuesday after it was determined they were a strong force behind both spam and fraud cases all over the internet. Of note was a significant drop in global spam since the shut down. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Meanwhile, the report mentions that McColo hosted command and control servers for some of the world’s biggest botnets — incorporated networks of infected computers under the control of a remote attacker or cybercrime group. In one example, the report states that the Sinowal Trojan virus tracked by security company RSA was found to have originated from a McColo IP address. RSA researchers ultimately found that the Sinowal malware was responsible for the theft of about 500,000 online bank account and credit and debit card numbers.

Migrating from Fantastico to SimpleScripts

SimpleScripts just added a new feature that will allow you to easily convert WordPress, Drupal, and phpBB to its system from Fantastico. If you like the day-of updates that SimpleScripts offers then this is a no brainer. Here’s a snippet from their website:

We have launched our automatic conversion utility! Currently only WordPress, Drupal and phpBB are supported, but several more are on their way. You can use it by visiting the WordPress, Drupal or phpBB installation pages (you’ll need to be logged in), and clicking on the “Convert a Fantastico Installation” link on the bottom of the page. This is a non-invasive process, so we won’t modify your files in any way. If your script is not supported, please read on.
